Vessel Design & Refurbishment

In any design, we assist our clients in articulating their innovations, ideas and science mission requirements. The most important expertise we offer is our ability to integrate the many requirements of the vessel’s potential users and operators. Our design integration process is aided by in-house expertise in the following areas.

Hull design. We design specialized hulls to meet the specific demands of research considering stability; seakeeping; speed; maneuvering; and underwater radiated noise. We are experts in the use of applied hydrodynamics, and hull optimization using state-of-the-art CFD technology. General arrangements. We design handling systems including A-frames, J-frames, hydro-booms and winch installations. We understand the issues of accessibility as well as the working relationship of labs and outside deck areas. Our designs consider wheelhouse visibility, lab and public space locations, and habitability needs for crew and scientists.

Structural design. We develop structural schemes and arrangement details that support specific domestic tonnage goals. We specialize in finite element analysis (FEA) which we use to analyze A-frames, winch foundations (permanent and portable), deck socket design and many other structural issues unique to research.

Mechanical and systems design. Our mechanical engineers regularly support our research vessel design work. Many hold current USCG operating licenses. We are familiar with the many aspects of machinery and systems including azimuthing propulsion systems, lab ventilation, specialized seawater systems, and noise control design measures.
